Part I
The Repression

Nunca Más (Never Again) - Report of Conadep  - 1984

Disappearance of Aída Celia Sanz Fernández and Esla Fernández de Sanz - Files N° 7162 and 7227

Aída Celia Sanz Fernández, a Uruguayan national, had been living in our country since May 1974. She was a nurse in the intensive care unit at the Spanish Association of Buenos Aires. At the time of her arrest - 23 December 1977 - she was about to have a baby. Her mother, Elsa Fernández de Sanz, had travelled from Uruguay to be present at the birth.

They were arrested at Aida Celia's house in the neighbourhood of San Antonio de Padua, in Buenos Aires province. It has been possible to establish through testimonies contained in the files referred to above that the daughter was seen at the secret detention centre called Pozo de Quilmes.

According to Washington Rodríguez, whose testimony is included in the file:

On 1 April 1978 I was kidnapped in Buenos Aires and taken to a secret detention centre in the neighbourhood of Quilmes. There I saw three Uruguayans, among them Aída Sanz. She had been arrested on 23 December and gave birth to a girl on 27 December. The baby was taken away from her immediately and was never heard of again ...
