Part I
The Repression

Nunca Más (Never Again) - Report of Conadep  - 1984

Secret detention centres in Mendoza province

When the Commission on Disappeared People made its two visits to Mendoza, over fifty people who had disappeared and been imprisoned for varying lengths of time gathered at the Provincial Parliament building where the Commission was meeting, offering testimony on their experiences in captivity. A further 150 depositions on an equal number of disappearances were received.

We have two possible explanations for the comparative lack of witnesses providing information on the latter:

1. That some disappeared were taken to another area controlled by 3rd Army Corps.

2. That the troops involved quickly exterminated many prisoners, hiding their bodies in one of many possible places in the province.

Let us take an overall look at the situation, based on these witnesses' accounts of secret detention centres.
